Councils stripped of control over water tanks, recycling.
Installation of a rainwater tank by Omega Plumbing Sydney's North Shore and Hills District saves water New South Wales councils have been stripped of their powers to scrutinise the installation of rainwater tanks or recycling systems for bath, shower and laundry water.
The State Government has announced the changes in a bid to encourage households to save water.
Premier Morris Iemma says the two measures aim to encourage households to take the initiative in saving water.
There will also be a $150 rebate for people purchasing energy efficient washing machines.
The Minister for Water Utilities David Campbell says households will still need a qualified plumber if they want to recycle their grey water.
